“One of the most important things to us right now is to ensure that these animals get homes. We truly believe in our mission to help the homeless and unwanted animals of the community and find them homes," Mary Nelson, the Friends of Animals interim director and board president, said.

2017 was a difficult year for the shelter financially.

"What a lot of people may not know about the facility is that it was not actually finished and that has been detrimental to the health of our animals," Nelson said.

Friends of Animals needed maintenance and operational work to get the facility in perfect running conditions.

Money was invested in the remodeling of the facility.

Several contractors offered help but issues arose with some of them due to pricing and time management.

"We found ourselves needing about $350,000 to cover operational through the end of the year and pay for the mortgage of our facility and finish the facility," Nelson said.

The organization had to use its savings money due to the unforeseen issues, leaving it with no money to finish the facility’s remodeling project and overall maintenance of the shelter.

That's why they're reaching out to the community.

“The public can help in so many ways. If they can help us with this appeal and help us pay off our mortgage and finish our facility,” Nelson said.

Friends of Animals plans on closing on August 5 but is determined to find a forever home for the animals.

"We have 15 dogs and 20 cats that we would love to find homes for. We are asking the community to open your hearts and open your homes,” Nelson said.

Friends of Animals is working closely with no-kill facility partners to transfer remaining animals to those locations before the closing date.

"We have hope for our future. We hope this is not forever, just for now, and that's why we're planting the seeds of hope," Nelson said.

The shelter said it plans on continuing its’ aluminum can recycling and rummage sale which helps financially with the shelter.

The shelter is accepting donations to help pay bills and the mortgage to keep the facility.
