The yard of Rodney and Laurie Carlson looks a little bit different, now that a 45-foot white spruce has been taken down. Crews came on Wednesday morning to carefully cut the tree, place it on a truck, and bring it to the plaza by Minnesota Power.

Rodney explained how this came to be. "This past summer all the trees were getting knocked down. I was talking to my neighbor who works for Minnesota Power. I just suggested that this could be used for the Christmas City of the North. I didn't want to lose it in a storm, I'd rather give it away like this."

Santa himself operated the crane!

Minnesota Power said the tree was chosen out of 26 nominations throughout the city.

The tree will now get decorated with thousands of LED lights before the official lighting next Friday, the 17th.
