A 6-year-old girl was found on the side of Hwy 61 Thursday night with no shoes, socks or winter clothing. The child's mother is now in custody.
Cook County deputies responded to the Grand Portage area and were met by two men who were helping keep the girl warm.
"The quick and decisive actions of the two men led to a positive outcome for this child," Sheriff Pat Eliasen said.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office said in a release that a parent had abandoned her without proper winter gear. Deputies took emergency custody of the child and located her mother.
She was arrested and is being held in the Cook County Jail pending charges.
Chief Deputy Will Sandstrom said the mother and child were not residents of Cook County, and its not clear what brought them up to Grand Portage.
Cook County Public Health and Human Services are helping care for the child.
