A long day on the water for a mother and son who had been canoeing on Leech Lake. According to the Cass County Sheriff's office, the 56-year-old from Monticello and the 28-year-old from Minneapolis had left a resort around 8:30am on Monday.

Around 3pm, authorities got the call about overdue canoeists, and started searching the lake. At around 7:15pm, a canoe was located on the north shore of the lake near Hardwood Point. And then, a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter spotted the two people on shore in a very remote area.

The two had been canoeing and capsized, floating for hours in the water with their canoe, before ending up on shore.

According to the sheriff's office, the two were taken back to the resort, and treated by North Ambulance on scene.

Sheriff Tom Burch credits the safe outcome to the use of life jackets and several agencies working together.
