Buhl Man Drowns Trying to Save Dog

A 56-year-old man drowned around 6:00 p.m. Saturday night in Buhl pit, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

A witness said Gary Paternoster was swimming to free his dog that was stuck.  Authorities said Paternoster began to drown before reaching his dog.

Paternoster was recovered by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad around 8:00 p.m.   He was transported to Fairview Hospital in Hibbing where he died from his injuries.
