Plenty of people visit the North Shore. After all, it's a mecca for hiking, camping, and paddling. But not all of it's fun and games. Soemtimes, there are emergency situations.

"When you talk to the first responders in the community, they tell us that so many incidents they respond to could be avoided if people were better equipped, better educated, and better prepared before they venture out into the wilderness," said Eric Block. He's the Boreal Emergency Preparedness Portal founder.

After the flooding of 2012, the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation has been encouraging non-profits to hep their communities prepare for emergencies. So Boreal Community Media came up with the portal.

"We thought it would be interesting to create a new website, with a lot of information in one place that people can use as a reference tool," Block shared. It has common sense tips, articles, and even videos.

Lisa Bauer, executive director of Boreal Community Media, told us she's been able to highlight some of the men and women and even animals who keep everyone safe. "Some of the things I've done is a ride-along with the Coast Guard. And we did a spotlight on the K-9 officer here at the County."

Law enforcement helped them shape the plan, and now get to benefit from it. "When we need to get something out to the public, we know everybody has internet on phones or at their desk, we give them a message and they will disseminate it for us," said Sheriff Pat Eliasen.

A grant from the Community Foundation helped them blanket the county with fliers, to get the word out about the portal. And as the Arrowhead prepares for the eventual blanket of fall leaves and snow, Boreal is now working on advice for the changing of the seasons.
