Duluth Man Sentenced in Hermantown Shooting

A Duluth man has been sentenced to about eight years in prison, for his involvement in a shooting back in September of 2018.

21 year old, Benny Ray Urrutia was convicted of first-degree assault, and was sentenced on Friday, January 4th. On October 25th, Urrutia pleaded guilty to assault and possession of a firearm. 

The criminal complaint said that Urrutia shot a woman in the backside, outside of the Econo Lodge Hotel in Hermantown on August 31st. He then pushed the victim into a vehicle, and fled into the Harbor Highlands neighborhood in Duluth. 

According to the complaint, Urrutia told investigators, “I didn’t mean to shoot my baby. I didn’t.”

Urrutia was arrested in the Harbor Highlands neighborhood after crashing his vehicle. The woman was also in the vehicle with him.
