Arson, Attempted Murder Charges Possible in Beltrami Co. Fire

Authorities arrested a man on possible charges of first-degree arson, first-degree attempted murder, and obstruction of legal process after a house fire near Bemidji on Monday evening.

The fire on Sunset Way in Northern Township was reported at about 8:20 p.m. When Beltrami County Sheriff's Deputies arrived, the occupants had escaped and flames were coming out of the home's lower level. The Bemidji Fire Department and Ambulance Service also responded to the scene.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, deputies observed that one of the occupants displayed "notable odd and erratic behavior." He was taken into custody for his own safety and, after interviews, was placed under arrest.

The 20-year-old was treated for smoke inhalation at the Bemidji hospital and later booked into the Beltrami County Jail. He remained on the jail roster as of Tuesday afternoon.

The State Fire Marshal's office is assisting in the investigation.
