Authorities said in a Facebook post, that 71-year-old Donald J. Finn of Cass Lake opened the mail on Monday evening. He reported to the sheriff's office that it contained a threatening message and a powder substance.

The sheriff's office, along with members of the FBI and a Minnesota Chemical Assessment Team, responded to his residence and took custody of the item.

Finn says that neither he nor his family members reported any ill effects from the substance.

The 71-year-old told authorities that he is a candidate for the Office of Secretary/Treasurer for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, and felt the suspicious mail was related to his candidacy.

Authorities say the item was sent to the Minnesota Department of Health for analysis.
