Beargrease planning race, likely without spectators

Mushers will "gee" and "haw" their way up the North Shore this winter in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

But when they take off from the starting shoot, there likely won't be spectators to hype up the dogs.

Beargrease organizers say the race, set to begin Jan. 31, 2021, is still on. But they are working with Minnesota Department of Health and DNR guidelines to come up with a COVID-19 plan.

"Canine safety is our #1 priority but the safety of our mushers, volunteers and fans are equally as important," an email read.

WDIO has plans to live stream the race start and will provide coverage along the trail.

Many mushers have begun fall training during the cool mornings. And race fans can train too -- for the first John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon Fur-k.

It's a virtual 5k race taking place over the weekend of Sept. 25-27. It can be run, walked, hiked -- or whatever scratches your belly. It's $30 to participate.

They ask that people share photos using #BeargreaseFurK2020.
