An unusual and rare set of bear attacks took place on Tuesday morning in Lake County. Deputies responded to a home on McDougal Lake around 10:45am, after one of the victims called 911.

Sheriff Carey Johnson said two construction workers were working on a garage. He said that one worker noticed a large bear approaching the other worker. The bear reportedly bit the one man on the arm, while the other worker tried to get the bear away. "They got away from the bear, and into a van for safety," Johnson said.

The bear then left the scene.

The worker who was bitten was taken to the Ely hospital. He is expected to survive. The other worker's clothes were torn, but he was not hurt, according to Johnson.

While the DNR and deputies tracked the bear, they found out another man had been attacked, likely just minutes before the incident with the construction workers.

"That victim was bit in the abdomen, while trying to protect his dog," Johnson said.

According to Captain Tom Provost, regional manager of the enforcement division for the DNR, said the 68-year-old drove himself to medical care in Ely. He also took his dog in for care, which is expected to survive.

Authorities shot and killed the bear at about noon. They said it is female and weighs between 150-200 pounds.

Provost said they plan on doing a full necropsy on the bear, to try and find out why it was awake and why it attacked. "They are supposed to be hibernating, and they are usually afraid of people. This is really hard to comprehend," he said over the phone from Grand Rapids.

The county also sent out a CODE RED Alert to residents in the Isabella area after the attack.
