One of the leaders at Duluth East is being recognized for creating supportive programs to help students achieve.
Kyle Rock has been named Assistant Principal of the Year by the NE Division of the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals.
Rock has been in education for nearly 20 years. But COVID threw everyone for a loop. He helped coordinate bus routes to make sure students could come in and get in-person supports, even before hybrid or in-person learning started up again.
"We found students who had contact with teachers have done better. It's been nice seeing them come into the school again, and be more successful," he shared.
After this long year, he said, "You just have to keep a positive outlook, and focus on the success stories. And take pride and joy in seeing students doing well, while still knowing students who are struggling need help. It's about trying to have an open mind and be empathetic to their situation, and be flexible with students and families when barriers come up."
The school district said he will be formally recognized at the summer conference for MASSP in June.
