Police, fire and medical personnel were called late Wednesday afternoon to help a 47-year-old man thought to be having a medical emergency. The man was given help on a bus, then eventually left and started walking toward a nearby library.

Police say that while the man was being attended, "the incident escalated " and shots were fired.

Firefighter Mitch Lundgaard was killed, and the 47-year-old who had been helped later died at a hospital.

A female bystander was also hit and is hospitalized in stable condition. A police officer was struck, but was treated and released.

Lundgaard, a 14-year veteran of the Appleton Fire Department, was married and had three children. A GoFundMe page to help his family had raised more than $7,000 by late Thursday afternoon.

A long line of emergency vehicles escorted Lundgaard's body from a medical examiner's office in Milwaukee back to Appleton on Thursday.

Police on motorcycles led the procession as it made its way north about 120 miles on Interstate 41. Firefighters with their truck lights flashing positioned themselves on interstate overpasses as the procession passed by on the way to an Appleton funeral home.
