Anglers across northern Minnesota have found themselves stranded on lakes over the weekend. Four ice anglers were rescued from Greenwood Lake in Cook County Sunday. Many others were stranded overnight on Lake Mille Lacs and Lake of the Woods.

Jason Schwartz and his family were among those stranded. Schwartz said they were able to get back to land Monday morning because they moved closer to land Saturday night.

Schwartz said, “we went about 25 miles out on Lake of the Woods and we had drilled our holes, and the weight of all the snow on the ice was making the water push up and flooding the houses."

It was at that point on Saturday that Schwartz and his group made the decision to move closer to Pine Island.

“We came in closer and set up camp there. Meanwhile, there’s hundreds of houses out there with trucks hooked up to them, and a lot of them are flooded and frozen into the lake.” He said, “everyone was stuck where they were, and there (were) people running out of fuel, people running out of propane, (and) people running out of gas in their vehicles trying to stay warm."

Schwartz said this all happened before the storm came. “When we set up (near Pine Island), the wind storm had set in, and it drifted all of the road ways across with 3 to 4 foot drifting, and nobody could get out.” They were stranded in their spot on the lake until late Monday morning when plows made it out to them.

At noon, Schwartz said the plows were about 15 miles out on the roads. “It’s just kind of scary that there’s not much cell phone service, if any, 25 miles out on the lake. And I’m afraid that there’s a lot of people that know somebody or has somebody out there that they haven’t been able to communicate with.”

Wigwam Resort posted on Facebook that they made it out to their last wheelhouse at 4:15 Monday evening.
