HIBBING - There are some pretty happy folks on the Iron Range. Nearly two dozen county workers in Hibbing are celebrating after winning $250,000 on the Powerball lottery.

Jean Seline is one of the 22 people who work at the Saint Louis County Courthouse that have pooled together the $3 a week to enter the national lottery.

“This is the type of jump start all Minnesotans could use in January,” said Seline.

The lucky 22 matched four of the five white balls plus the Powerball in Wednesday’s drawing. Normally, that pays out a nice $50,000. But they also hit on the Powerplay, multiplying the winnings by five.

Angela Baumchen is a facilities manager at the courthouse. Other members in the pool work in various departments including, but not exclusive to, property management and the Hibbing Police Department.

They didn't know they had won until someone checked the numbers the following day during his shift at the courthouse. And when he realized they hit, pandemonium spread throughout the building.

He charged into my office and slammed the door shut, and I was expecting something terrible. And he said we won $250,000!" said Baumchen.

Each of the 22 is expected to take home about $7,500 after taxes, and they are planning on heading down to the lottery headquarters where they will celebrate the winnings together.

The ticket was purchased across the street from the courthouse at the Hibbing Short Stop.

The group say this pool has been running every week for about 15 years, and they say they will continue to play the Powerball every week until they hit the jackpot.
