The St. Louis County Fair opened Wednesday to some spurts of rain, but the weather didn't stop die-hard fair goers.

It's the annual fair's 133rd year, and they call it "The Five Best Days of Summer."

"We are into by now at least fourth generation in this fair as far as exhibitors go," Bettie Valley, St. Louis County Fair manager, said. "There's a lot of adults here now who grew up in the fair. There's a lot of seniors here who grew up at the fair exhibiting with their grandparents."

That was Elizabeth Shuster's experience.

"My sister and I used to be in 4H, and my sister used to do horse rides and everything," Shuster, who is from Orr, said.

Shuster said her favorite part of the fair is the food.

"Got to get the fair food, the cheese curds. You only get those maybe once or twice a year," Shuster said. "And we gotta get some fried bread before we leave too."

For 7-year-old Grace Brohman-Ashby, the fair is all about the Midway.

"We're checking out the rides, see what I can ride," Grace said. "I've been going on scary ones and boring ones."

Grace said the rain "doesn't bother her at all."

"It's just really fun to be at fairs," she said.

There's also local entertainers, artists and agriculture.

"The people ... working in agriculture are busy," Valley said. "They're in the fields, they're making hay when the sun shines and that kind of thing. This is a time for them to come together and catch up and just share information: what worked for them, what didn't work."

The fair runs Wednesday through Sunday. More information and schedules can found on the St. Louis County Fair website

"It's fun, it's entertainment, it's educational, it's sharing," Valley said. "It's just a gathering place."
