A Northland school is being nationally recognized as a distinguished school. Iron River Elementary School is one of 100 schools across the country to be recognized for exceptional student achievement.

The school received the award based on their high achievement over the past three years. That was measured through state assessment scores such as the Wisconsin Forward Exam.

On Wednesday, students, current and former teachers, school board members, and community members gathered for an award ceremony.

At one point during the ceremony, all the current and former teachers were asked to stand, as were the current school board members as a way to recognize them for their part in helping the school get the award.

School officials and community members agree it's a monumental accomplishment.

"It means that our students and teachers and support staff have reached the top of their game with educational achievement," said Maple School District Superintendent Dr. Sara Croney.

"As a parent, I'm very proud, as a former student, I think it's an awesome job. They did an amazing job, and still continue to," said Heather Miller, who has kids at Iron River Elementary School.

Dr. Croney and principal Bradley Larrabee were among the group who accepted the award a couple of weeks ago in Atlanta, Georgia.

As Dr. Croney says, it's a pretty incredible achievement for a town that doesn't have a population sign.
