Some African leaders rallied around the WHO’s Ethiopian-born director-general and the agency’s Europe chief insisted a worldwide pandemic was no time to reduce the budget of the body that is coordinating an often-disjointed international response.

According to the WHO’s website, the U.S. contributed nearly $900 million to the agency's 2018-2019 budget, which was one-fifth of the total budget for those years.
