LONDON (AP) - Britain has announced new post-Brexit immigration rules that will make it tougher for European Union citizens, but easier for people from many other nations, to move to the U.K. starting next year.

The government says its new “points-based immigration system” will assess prospective immigrants on a range of skills, qualifications, salaries or professions.

The Conservative government says the new rules will “open up the U.K. to the brightest and the best from around the world,” but employers warn there could be labor shortages for sectors such as health and social care that currently rely on relatively low-paid EU workers.

Brexit means that EU citizens no longer have the automatic right to live and work in Britain.
