CUDAHY, Calif. (AP) - A mist of jet fuel dumped by an airliner making an emergency return to Los Angeles International Airport has fallen on several schools.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department says 56 children and adults had minor skin and lung irritation Tuesday.

The department says skin irritations were treated with soap and water, and no one needed to be taken to a hospital.

Delta Air Lines says the flight to Shanghai had an engine problem shortly after takeoff that required a quick return and that it dumped fuel to reduce weight. The Federal Aviation Administration says procedures call for fuel to be dumped over unpopulated areas.
