GRAND MARAIS - Construction is expected to resume on Hwy 61 in Grand Marais on May 6.  According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, initial work will be occurring from 3rd Avenue West to Broadway and 8th Avenue West to 3rd Avenue West on the lake side. Beginning Tuesday, the truck detour will route traffic on County Road 7. This is phase 2A of the project with Minnesota Pollution Control.

Drivers should remain alert to detour information. MnDOT says southbound traffic will be detoured on County Road 7 to 8th Avenue W. Northbound traffic will have a detour on Wisconsin Street and Broadway Avenue.

According to the project website, the highway will be closed completely between 3rd Avenue West and Broadway Avenue from mid-May to August. Only a single northbound/eastbound lane of traffic will be allowed past 8th Avenue West. The project, once finished, will provide smoother pavement surfaces, improved pedestrian accessibility and safety, and improved drainage and stream stability. MnDOT's website says total cost will be $20 million.

The closed section of highway in Grand Marais is expected to reopen in early August. Construction will continue until October between 8th Avenue West and 3rd Avenue West, which will be limited to northbound/eastbound traffic.

Meanwhile, a stretch of Highway 61 south of Grand Marais will also be closed in August for replacement of the Fall River box culvert. Traffic will be detoured onto County Road 7.

The highway will also be resurfaced between Coyote Ridge and 8th Avenue West, with additional accessibility improvements and drainage repairs between Fall River Road and 8th Avenue West.

The virtual public meeting will be held on April 19 at 4 p.m. using WebEx. Information on how to connect online or via phone is posted at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d1/projects/hwy-61-grand-marais/meetings.html.
