The U.S. Forest Service said as of Friday morning the Hassel Lake fire is now 100% contained. This means that fire crews have achieved a line around the perimeter of the fire to keep it from spreading.

This morning firefighters will patrol the estimated 21 acre fire one more time to make sure that the conditions do not change.

Hassel Lake is about 10 miles northeast of Tower, Minn within the Boundary Waters. It is west of Burntside Lake and Crab Lake.

Lightning ignited the wildfire last week. The Forest Service says recent precipitation and higher humidy levels helped surpress the fire.

A Forest Closure of lakes, campsites, and portages within the BWCAW west of Crab Lake is in place to ensure public and firefighter safety.

This Closure Area includes:

  • Clark Lake
  • Saca Lake
  • Meat Lake
  • Phantom Lake
  • Boulder Lake
  • Battle Lake
  • Hassel Lake
  • Lunetta Lake
  • Schlamn Lake and all the associated portages and campsites in this area.

The closure includes the creek between Lunetta Lake and Little Crab Lake.

BWCAW Entry Point #4 Crab Lake remains open.
