Authorities on the Iron Range say a 5-year-old boy has died after falling falling into a mine pit.

The incident was reported at 4:09 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Virginia Police Department responded to the report of someone falling over the side of the mine pit, located near 3rd Street North and 1st Avenue North.

Law enforcement were able to locate the child's body. The boy fell approximately 70 feet.

The incident is under investigation, but authorities do believe it was an accident. The Virginia Fire Department Rescue Team and the St. Louis County Sherrif's Department assisted in the efforts today.
