Two young children were rescued after falling from a cliff at Gooseberry Falls State Park on Saturday afternoon, the Lake County Sheriff's Office says.

The sheriff's office says the children were injured after they fell into the Gooseberry River and over the falls shortly after 3:00 Saturday afternoon. Condition and age of the children is unknown.

Rescue personnel and ambulances from Two Harbors and Silver Bay responded to the scene. The children were airlifted to a Duluth hospital in two separate Life Link helicopters.

The popular park along Highway 61 features numerous waterfalls and cliffs along the Gooseberry River. Visitors frequently go off trail to explore the area, and many people could be seen playing in the falls a short time after the incident.
