Unemployment extension for steelworkers passes in the special session
During their one day special session, lawmakers signed off on the unemployment extension for 600+ steelworkers.
The miners are facing an indefinite lay off, at both Hibtac and Minorca Mine.
The extended benefits are an additional 26 weeks of unemployment, and will provide essential support for affected workers and their families as the region works toward long-term economic stability and job recovery.
Senators Grant Hauschild and Rob Farnsworth worked on this together in the Senate, and Pete Johnson and others did so in the House.
Local 6115 President Al King has been posting updates on YouTube for his members. He said recently that the union has been working tirelessly to handle this situation. And that they have an agreement in place with the company that if equipment is moved to other facilities that they will be notified.
