Layoffs are coming to Minntac, which means a 4th mine is feeling the impact of COVID-19.

According to Local 1938, about 260 people will be laid off starting on May 10th. The breakdown of areas is yet to be determined.

The layoffs will be about 8 weeks for plant employees and about 11 weeks for pit employees, according to the union.

The union said this is all coming together very quickly, and they are working on a layoff minimization plan.

U.S. Steel had mentioned adjusting production at Minntac in a filing to the SEC on Thursday.

The other U.S. Steel owned facility, Keetac, is going to be indefinitely idled after a major repair is completed.

Northshore Mining has been idled, which is owned by Cleveland Cliffs. And Hibbing Taconite will be idled Sunday.
