On Monday, Governor Walz sent letters to the CEOs of U.S. Steel and Cleveland-Cliffs, urging them to call him so they can discuss the challenges ahead for Minntac and Hibbing Taconite.
Hibtac, in particular, is facing a limited mine life. Cliffs is the majority owner there.
In the letter, Walz said Minntac has reliable reserves available for the immediate future, but has expressed interest in securing leases for additional high quality ore that would solidify the long-term options for the mine. U.S. Steel owns Minntac.
The letters says he looks forward to engaging in discussions to lay the groundwork for the continued success of both the mines.
