Going to work or a working fire, ArcelorMittal employees are ready

Casey Omersa was supposed to be moving into his new home on Sunday, July 5th. But instead, his pager went off. He's a volunteer firefighter with the Gilbert Fire Department.

"We hopped in our ladder truck and headed to Virginia. When we got there, we knew it was going to be a long one. It was hot, and there were a lot of flames," he remembered.

He noticed his co-worker from Minorca Mine, Jaimie Johnson, at the scene. She lives in the neighborhood. "It was kind of cool to see people you work with, while you're doing your other job," he told us. "She and her husband were making sure we had fresh water and garbages, and making sure we were good."

ArcelorMittal said there were six of their employees at that one fire scene. Another employee at Minorca was Dan Hamilton, who is a member of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.

Omersa said, "After all these fires together, and everyone doing mutual aid projects, you really get to know the guys. It's a really big team dynamic, and it makes things go a lot smoother. I feel better knowing everybody is going to have your back."

More people have learned about his volunteering. "My dad was a firefighter in Gilbert too. Getting to grow up with those guys, and now working with them, I really enjoy it," Omersa said. He said others volunteer around the region too. "Now we get to talk about what we do outside of work."

So going to work, or a working fire, he could see some of the same people.
