UMD presents The Ice Fishing Play
The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Department of Theatre is setting the stage for Kevin Kling’s The Ice Fishing Play. The Minnesota playwright tells the story of a fisherman who stays out on the ice before the storm, angling for the ever-elusive big one from the bottom of the lake.
Visiting Director Sean Byrd, a professor at Normandale Community College, directs a group of mostly Minnesota natives. To him, the play is an exploration of isolation, communication and miscommunication, and memory.
“I think the play speaks to that ghostly feeling of being alone and yet still surrounded by the echoes of others,” says Byrd. “The fragile lake ice beneath our main character becomes not just a physical space, but a metaphor for how we navigate relationships, loss, and connection.”
