Superior Aero Estates ready for takeoff

Superior Aero Estates ready for takeoff

The vision is to have Duluth's first aviation community.

A new development of hangar homes is ready for takeoff north of Duluth.

The grass runway is built, and this Saturday, people are invited to a “fly-in open house” at the site of Superior Aero Estates just off Hwy 53 in Saginaw, Minn.

Developer and pilot Nick Clattenberg said there are three reasons he’s been working on this project since 2016: “There’s people who want to live with their planes. There’s currently a hangar shortage in the area. And frankly, because I just wanted to put a runway somewhere.”

He said aviation communities are common in other parts of the country, especially warmer states like Texas and Florida.

“There are a few in Minnesota already, but they’re filled. Unless somebody sells their lot, there’s nothing available,” Clattenberg said. “So this is the first blank-slate aviation community in this region.”

There are seven lots available, all of them at least 4.5 acres. Owners will have deeded access to the runway and electric and fiber optic to the curb. Beyond that, it’s up to the homeowner exactly what they want to build.

Clattenberg hopes home construction can start in the early fall.

The fly-in open house goes from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Saturday, June 7. Superior Aero Estates will also soon open up smaller, 2-acre lots for sale.
