Rear Adm. Mike Brown on the Navy Week mission

Rear Adm. Mike Brown explains what Navy Week means to the Northland.

Duluth is one of 15 cities chosen to host a Navy Week in 2025.

Rear Adm. Mike Brown came into town for it along with demonstration groups like the Ceremonial Guard, the Blue Angels, and the Navy Parachute Team.

“We are here to bring the Navy to the people of the Northland,” Rear Adm. Brown said, “and to remind you that even though you don’t see big gray ships in this vast unsalted sea behind us, the Navy belongs to the people of Duluth and Superior as much as it belongs to the people of San Diego, Calif., and Norfolk, Va.”

He said Duluth was a good location for Navy Week in part because of its rich maritime history. Brown also shared about the variety of careers available through the United States Navy.

“We have pilots, we have surface warfare officers, submarine officers, and then we have all of the specialties that go along with that: seamanship, navigation, sonar technicians,” Brown said.

There are also Navy career paths with which people may not be familiar.

“We have robotics specialists that work with our unmanned systems in the air and on and below the water,” Brown said. “We have culinary specialists. We have some of the best cooks in the world.”
