Planning for the summer art fair season with Art by SJ Nielsen
Working in her home studio in the Denfeld Neighborhood, watercolor artist Sam Nielsen is gearing up for another busy summer art fair season.
Her business Art By SJ Nielsen is known for beautiful paintings of iconic locations across the North Shore. She’s since expanded to also making stickers, pins, and other fun things that have her paintings on them.

For her current project Sam is painting 100 little mini landscapes. For her current project Sam is painting 100 little mini landscapes. “First I’m on a hunt for a good reference photo. Whether that’s my own or licensing an image from someone,” says Sam, “and I usually do the ink first with which like shocks people. I think they think I do the paint first, but I don’t.”
With the power of her brush, Sam has been able to make landscapes feel like they are coming to life right in front of her customers’ eyes.
“It is a very fulfilling experience. I think just getting to see this is where all my hard work is reaching and touching other people,” she says.
