Best seeds for late-May planting

May is not too late to start a garden in Minnesota. Here are some tips to the green thumb.

It’s not too late for spring planting. Caroline Hegstrom of Taiga Farm and Seed says there are some fast-growing veggies that thrive in colder climates.

Beans, beets, lettuce, and zucchini can still be planted in late May. You can also start things like summer squash, kale, cabbage, and tomatoes inside.

Hegstrom also demonstrated an easy way to keep track of what you’ve planted with wooden paint sticks or shims. She suggests writing on them with a Sharpie and making sure the label is facing north so that it doesn’t fade.

Taiga sells seed collections specifically curated for a northern Midwest climate.
