Behind the lens of 20 years photographing Grandma’s Marathon

For more than 20 years, Duluth News Tribune photographer Clint Austin has photographed runners along the Grandma’s Marathon course and captured touching moments at the finish line.
The race made him the 2025 recipient of the Marsh Nelson Media Award.
Austin said it’s always humbling to be at the finish line.
“Because the athletes give their all, and the emotion that bubbles to the surface when that happens,” Austin said. “And I always say that I’m like the kid in ‘Willy Wonka.’ Someone gave me a press pass long ago, and that’s my golden ticket. I get to be there and have the best seat in the house.”
