Animal Allies held its annual Helping Animals in the Community event on Thursday before the 4th of July. Animal Allies campers run a lemonade stand fundraiser and people were able to bring their pet in to be microchipped for free.

“It has kind of become a fun tradition for us,” Nicole Faciotto, spokesperson from Animal Allies says. “We historically see more stray animals, lost animals coming through our door over 4th of July weekend. So we like to offer this free chip clinic to the community in the hopes that we can get those guys right back home if they come through our doors.”

While humans enjoys the booms and whistles of fireworks, it can be scary for pets who don’t understand what’s going on.

Luckily, the microchipping process is quick and simple. The chip is inserted between a pet’s shoulder blades and registered to the owner’s contact informations. Unlike collars and tags, which can fall off or be damaged, the microchip is a permanent way to make sure your pet gets home.

“It’s not a tracker,” Facciotto clarified. “Most police departments, vet offices, and shelters have a chip scanner. We scan the animal, their unique individual number pops up, we put it in the database, and then we can find you.”

Helping Animals in the Community also serves as an educational opportunity for the campers. It teaches them about community service by raising money through the lemonade stand. They also get to see the process of microchipping and learn about its benefits.
