Walking, riding, and rolling to school this morning

For National Bike to School Day, Congdon Park Elementary hosts their annual bike to school day. Students and families walked or biked to school to bring the community together before starting the school day.

The event started with just only 80 students and now how grown over the years to have over 120 students riding their way to school. The Safe routes coordinator said not only does it bring the community together, but it helps raise awareness of students who bike to school regularly.

“It’s great to move your body before you come to school. Your mental health just improves,” said Andie Heil, Safe Routes to School Coordinator. “You really get to wake up. And then it also creates a healthier community for everyone around us. And we really hope to promote the continuation, not just at this event, but to do it on a daily basis when they come to and from school”

For the first time this year, the event was promoted and supported by fellow elementary schools in the district. Piedmont Elementary and Laura MacArthur Elementary helped promote the event.

For schools or PTA in the district interested in setting up their own bike routes and bike days, they are recommended to reach out to Andie for the free materials from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
