Remembering those who gave everything, Memorial Day ceremony

In Gary-New Duluth, City officials, veterans, and families all came together to remember those who served our country.

In Gary-New Duluth, City officials, veterans, and families all came together to remember those who served our country. Over the hour and a half ceremony, various ways to honor those who have fallen was held.

Flags were presented from across the United States’ history. As the names of those who were killed in action or while in service of their country were spoken aloud to be memorialized. This was followed by the presentation of the Wreath by Merry Waters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. As a rifle salute to all who serve occurred thereafter.

Mayor Roger Reinert spoke a few words on the importance of honoring Memorial Day and all those who served. Before the keynote speaker of Michael Henderson, an Army pilot who served in Iraq, Republic of Korea, and Egypt.

“Memorial Day is not just a date on the calendar,” Henderson said. “It’s a living remembrance, a sacred pause, a moment to breathe in the freedom we enjoy and to remember the price paid for it.”

After a closing prayer, the community all sang together America the Beautiful, God Bless America and My Country ‘Tis of Thee.

“We make space in our hearts and our lives to remember. We say their names,” said Henderson in closing.
