Reconditioning 6th Ave East to maintain and be pedestrian-friendly

The City of Duluth begins construction on the Sixth Avenue East reconditioning project on June 11, 2025. The reconditioning work includes an asphalt overlay of 6th Avenue East and Central Entrance in Duluth. They will also do a bituminous overlay and add concrete walks, curb and gutter, and ADA pedestrian ramps. The project utility work includes water mains and services, and storm sewers.

Reconditioning will take a few phases and aims to be completed in October 2025. Beginning June 11, the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:

  • Ninth Street between Sixth Avenue East and Seventh Avenue East
  • Tenth Street between Central Entrance and Sixth Avenue East
  • The outside lane in both directions will also be closed as needed on Central Entrance between Mesaba Avenue. As well as on Sixth Avenue East and Sixth Avenue East from Ninth Street to Second Street.

A signed detour will direct motorists to use Tenth Avenue East, East Fourth Street, and Sixth Avenue East to bypass the closure on Ninth Street. While Central Entrance and Sixth Avenue East will remain open during this phase, lane closures in these areas may contribute to slower travel times.

What are they reconditioning?

The first phase of work includes lead service line replacements, curb and sidewalk repairs, and traffic
signal upgrades. This phase is expected to be completed in July 2025. As the project progresses, other improvements will include the Construction of a center median island on Sixth Avenue East between Fifth Street and Ninth Street, allowing safer foot traffic. This second phase will also see improvements to the Traffic signal with street resurfacing of Sixth Avenue East from East Second Street to East Ninth Street, and Central Entrance from Sixth Avenue East to Mesaba Avenue.

The four-lane avenue will also be getting a lane reconfiguration to enhance safety and mobility.
