Defying all limits at the Lutsen 99er
The Lutsen 99er competition rolls into town this weekend, bringing nearly 2,000 cyclists from 42 states and four different countries.
This morning, Adam Soderlind, a four-time competitor in the event, joined Sierra Naess to share his journey.
Biking started off as a great recovery exercise for Soderlind after undergoing two hip replacement surgeries.
“Back in 2012 and 2014, I needed to have hip replacements… I didn’t know what I was going to do afterward because they tell you that you can’t, or shouldn’t, play basketball, tennis, volleyball, or do these kinds of things anymore. So, they said, ‘Bike,’” said Soderlind.
He goes on to share that Duluth is the perfect place to train.
“Training usually starts right after the snow melts. And then I get on the bike and just ride as many hours or miles as I can.”
While he’s ready for the 45-miler, he mentions that he won’t be participating in the jumps due to his hips.
To anyone looking to start their fitness journey, especially those struggling with personal mental or physical challenges, Soderlind encourages them to take the leap. He emphasizes that his decision to start biking changed his life, helped him get fit, and that it’s okay to go at your own pace.
“The important thing is that you move! Take it easy. And walk. Walk bridges. Walk rock gardens. If you’re scared of them, just walk them and learn,” he says.
The Lutsen 99er takes place on Saturday, June 28th at the Superior National Golf Course. Go cheer Adam and the other riders on, and maybe this is your sign to give it a shot!
