Grizzly bears are spreading into new areas of the U.S. Northern Rockies, expanding from remote wildernesses and into low-level farmland near Yellowstone National Park. The expansion comes amid a legal fight over proposed hunting.
U.S. officials are asking a federal appeals court to allow grizzly bear hunts in and around Yellowstone National Park. Government attorneys say a lower court judge was wrong to require a review of grizzlies everywhere before lifting protections in the Yellowstone Region.
Fort Snelling State Park will remain closed through June because of flooding and damage from a hefty winter snowpack and heavy spring rains. The park is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers in the Twin Cities.
