Willow River van driver named Special Education Transporter of the Year

Willow River van driver honored for his work transporting special ed students

A statewide honor for a now retired driver for Willow River area schools.

Osten Berg has retired on a high note. He received the Special Ed Transporter of the Year from MAPT, the Minnesota Association of Pupil Transportation.

He had almost 10 years with Willow River, after careers in law enforcement and fraud investigation.

Berg tells us he started his day at 4:45am each day, checking the vans, to make sure they’re safe and ready to go.

He knows they carry precious cargo, like Brayden, who just finished the 4th grade.

During the trips, which can span 70 miles, he keeps them engaged. “We count the deer, or look for turkeys, or they share which stop is next.”

Along with the help of a paraprofessional, they have access to what makes those rides as smooth as possible. “In Willow River we’ve developed a program so our drivers know about the kids we’re transporting, and their special needs,” he explained.

His brother, Nathan Berg, nominated him for the Special Education Transporter of the Year. “Last year’s recipient was well deserving, and from a bigger school district. But I thought, that could be us,” Nathan Berg shared.

Mr. Osten, as the kids call him, was shocked. “I’m honored to have won this award. I love this job.”

Parents and kids are sad to see him retire, but happy for him as well. Congrats, Mr. Osten!
