Wildfires Update: Horse River Fire now 53% contained

The National Incident Management Organization (NIMO) Team has reported significant containment gain in Horse River Fire containment on Friday, which is now 53% contained compared to 0% reported on Thursday.

The NIMO Team also anticipates another rain system over the weekend that will bring substantial rain to the areas of both fires.

JENKINS CREEK FIRE: 94% contained, 16,145 acres

Crews will continue to monitor the fire perimeter of the Jenkins Creek Fire and address any fire sources.

“Recognizing that sources of heat well within the interior of the fire may remain active into the summer, operational staff have begun to identify contingency lines along existing roads removed from the fire perimeter,” explained NIMO Team. “Fuel reduction using masticators will begin along contingency lines in the coming days. New mapping with the UAS and ground crews will result in future acreage adjustments.”

HORSE RIVER FIRE: 53% contained, 13 acres

NIMO Team said that rainy weather and continued efforts to identify and suppress heat sources has resulted in gains in containment of the Horse River Fire.

“Crews in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness were unable to locate any active heat within the perimeter of the Horse River Fire for the third consecutive day,” continued a statement from NIMO Team. “Today, they will start to dismantle the remote work site area and remove non-essential firefighting equipment.”
