Understanding your ballot question: Minnesota Constitutional Amendment

Bald Eagle, File. (John McGill, Two Harbors)
As voters in Minnesota head to the polls on election day, one question they will be asked on their ballot is in regard to a Minnesota Constitutional Amendment.
The question on Minnesota ballots reads: Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to protect drinking water sources and the water quality of lakes, rivers, and streams; conserve wildlife habitat and natural areas; improve air quality; and expand access to parks and trails by extending the transfer of proceeds from the state-operated lottery to the environment and natural resources trust fund, and to dedicate the proceeds for these purposes?
The constitutional amendment was first approved in 1988, allocating 40% of Minnesota Lottery’s revenue into the Environment & Natural Resources Trust Fund. The money is then allocated to conservation organizations through grants distributed by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.
The 2024 vote will decide whether the amendment will continue for another 25 years.
