Survivor volunteers at Aspirus St. Luke’s Breast Cancer Center

Every Tuesday, you can find 70-year-old Becky Ballou Buck volunteering at the Aspirus St. Luke’s Breast Cancer Center.
She’s checking in with patients, making calls, helping technicians and there to offer a comforting word. As a six-year survivor of breast cancer herself, Becky brings a tremendous value to the team and patients.
Becky didn’t have a family history of breast cancer of any of the risk indicators. Her diagnosis was initially a shock and led to her retirement.
Now cancer-free, Becky says she started volunteering to feel a sense of purpose, “We want people to feel comfortable and to put them at ease.”
The first hand experience allows Becky to connect with patients in a unique powerful way, helping them feel seen, supported and a little less alone.
