Sunday night storms uproot trees in portions of the Northland

Another round of severe weather moved through the region overnight Sunday into Monday morning. These systems brought lightning, strong winds and rain through Minnesota overnight and into Northwest Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan this morning.

Sandy Ohlquist shared video of the lightning show in International Falls. She said the lightning looked like fireworks. There were trees down near International Falls.

There were reports of storm damage from Sunday nights storms in St. Louis, Crow Wing, and Aitkin Counties.

  • 3:30 AM – 5 NW Melrude – Dock flipped, damage to a pontoon boat, trees down – St. Louis County
  • 3:55 AM – 1 NE Eveleth – Large maple tree down across a house – St. Louis County
  • 2:14 AM – 1 SSE Crosby – Large oak tree snapped, other smaller trees down – Crow Wing County
  • 2:30 AM – 1 S Aitkin – Large oak tree down on house, downed powerlines – Aitkin County
  • 2:55 AM – 2 S Libby – Numerous reports of large trees down near Big Sandy Lake – Aitkin County
  • 3:43 AM – 2 S Melrude – Three medium to small trees snapped near base – St. Louis County
  • 4:25 AM – Biwabik – Trees down on house – St. Louis County
  • 3:59 AM – 2 S Markham – Trees down on powerlines – St. Louis County
  • 3:59 AM – 3 ESE Eveleth – Trees down on powerlines – St. Louis County
  • 3:41 AM – 3 W Shaw – Trees down on powerline – St. Louis County
  • 3:37 AM – Several medium to large spruce trees snapped at base – St. Louis County
  • 3:51 AM – 2 W Red Cliff – 5-10 medium to large poplar trees snapped approximately 4 to 8 feet up, on road – Bayfield County
  • 3:00 AM – 3 WSW Swan River – Mature ash tree down – Itasca County
  • 3:30 AM – Floodwood – Mature hardwood tree down – St. Louis County
  • 2:01 AM – 1 NW Brainerd – Large tree down – Crow Wing County
