Severe thunderstorms blew through the region overnight, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and hail. The storms started to pick up in intensity around 11:00 pm, especially from Beltrami County through Grand Rapids and Virginia. By 3 am, strong storms covered much of the Northland. There were many reports of power outages.

Authorities in Bemidji say they had heavy damage. According to the Bemidji Fire Department, emergency crews have been responding to emergency calls and assessing the damage. The city’s priority is to clear roads. Authorities in Beltrami County advise against unnecessary travel due to numerous downed power lines. They ask that property damage not be reported until daylight hours.
