Canoeist recovered in BWCA identified

A deceased individual was found near a capsized canoe in the BWCA (WDIO).

The canoeist whose body was recovered in Iron Lake on Saturday, May 10 has been identified as 62-year-old Saint Louis Park resident Robert Sydney James.

The Sheriff’s Office has announced that a deceased individual was found in the BWCA.
On May 10 at around 2:18 p.m., US Forest Service employees reported a capsized canoe on Iron Lake. After further investigation, the Forest Service discovered a deceased individual, as well as their gear near the canoe.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the deceased party was found wearing a life jacket, and is thought to have been on a solo trip in the boundary waters.
The name of the deceased canoer has not been released, pending notification of the next of kin.
The situation is now being investigated by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a deputy and rescue squad is responding to a initial report of a body found at the bottom of Curtain Falls on Iron Lake in the BWCA on May 10.
The Sheriff’s office has said it is working in cooperation with the US Forest Service. No other information has been given at this time.
