Runners brave subzero temps for a shot at entry to sold out Grandma’s marathon
Most people getting out in the cold for winter activities are skiing, skating or sledding, but here in Duluth a group of runners got together to train for Grandma’s Marathon on Tuesday January 21st.
Braving the sub-zero temperatures, the official Grandma’s Marathon training group zipped up their coats and hit the road.
“It’s not quite as bad as you might think,” said head coach Tony Stensland. “It’s not easy to get out the door on days like this and it’s not easy to get started either. But once you do, it’s not so bad. There’s a sense of pride afterwards that you’ve done it too.”
The group meets three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for 22 weeks, training all the way up to Grandma’s Marathon.
“We have an amazing active culture. The weather doesn’t change their attitudes, really,” said Tony Stensland. “They just get out and do it. It’s just a wonderful group of people to be associated with.”
Registration for Grandma’s marathon is sold out but the first 150 people to register for the Grandma’s Marathon official training group will get guaranteed entry into Grandma’s full or half Marathon.
