Recognizing the 5th Annual National Day of Awareness for MMIWR

5th Annual National Awareness Day for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives
On Monday, at the steps of Duluth City Hall, many from across the Northland gathered to honor the 5th annual National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives’.
Many wore red, and articles of red clothing was hung around the courtyard to represent the pain and suffering faced by the missing and murdered relatives.
““I feel like it is an upcoming pandemic, not just Minnesota, but around the world. It’s happening everywhere, all around the United States. Supporting these kinds of events can bring it out to the world and let them know about it,” said Kayla Jackson, longtime friend of Peter Martin, who has been missing since March 8th of 2024.

Peter’s friends and family were in attendance at the event, joining others who remember loved ones lost or not yet found.
“It’s really significant for us to get closure and bring him home and so we don’t have to go to bed that night, worrying about a relative anymore,” said Ian Martin, Peter’s nephew.
The day also carried extra weight for Peter’s loved ones, as it also marked his birthday.
“This is a nice event to really highlight Peter, to really get people to remember him and acknowledge the support that we have from the community, family, friends, and to all come together,” said Jackson.
Ian highlighted the difficulty faced by the Martin family since Peter’s disappearance, but also how hope can come through the outpouring of community support.
“For me, it gives a good sense of community, a good sense of family for our communities to come together like this and bring awareness to our big issues in our community,” said Martin.
If anyone has any tips or information related to the whereabouts of Peter Martin, call the Fond du Lac police department or the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
