NorthRidge Community Credit Union shares impact that childcare has on business
NorthRidge Community Credit Union is proud of the growth of the company, now that they have five branches.
Liz Popp is the VP of Administration, and does the HR duties for the approximately 30 employees.
And although they are growing as a company, the people who work for them are also growing their families.
“I feel like it goes through threes. If we have one person pregnant, than we have three. And a lot more have decided to stay home after instead of coming back,” shared Popp.
Sometimes it’s a choice. But sometimes it’s because they can’t find child care.
Nicholas Mathiowetz, the President and CEO of NorthRidge, said, “It’s really hard to lose good people, because they can’t find a place to take their kids.”
As a business, they work hard to adjust. But it puts them in a difficult position too. Popp said, “Another pain point for us, is if they can find day care, but not for six months. If they’re a great employee, how do we figure out a way to keep them?”
It’s a struggle across the region, which is the Day Without Childcare movement is coming up on Monday, March 3rd.
It’s a way for providers to get the message out that they need more state funding to keep going, or grow.
Mathiowetz would like to see more support for childcares, because he said it’s more than just a family thing. It’s about the economy and community, he added.
There is a rally in Virginia on the Highway 169 bridge after 3pm. There are also events in Duluth as well.
